Sixth graders, with the help of Ms. Zive and a program called In Design, produced newspapers this month. Each newspaper included an editorial, a feature article, and a news story, plus an ad or editorial cartoon. They were awesome. Soon, I will post some of these papers on my web site.
What was your reaction to the newspaper project and journalism as a whole? What did you like and dislike? Why? I think creating the newspapers was pretty stressful. There was a lot to get done and a lot todo. People started worrying how they were going to finish it on time. All in all it was a fun but worrysome experience.
I thought the newspapers were somewhat fun and somewhat stressful to do. If you managed your time well, then they were fun. But if you held everything off, they were definitely stressful. On the day we had to turn them in, there were definitely a lot of people with a significant amount of work to do.
I thought that making newspapers were fun but hectic. I thought it was very interesting to make a feature article, a news article, and an editorial but we had a lot to get done. Although nearly every student could have managed their time better so if the students managed their time slightly better the project wouldn't have been nearly as stressful as it was. So really, the students shouldn't have had a lot to do on Monday, the due date of the newspaper. I think that the newspaper was one of the most fun projects of the year.
I thought it was fun and not too stressful, because it seemed to me that everyone managed their time fairly well. I was able to manage my time very well and was able to be relaxed and finish on time. I liked the journalism unit a lot.
I thought that the newspapers were tough because we had to the three article. I thought that it was kind of stressful and hard to do. I did not have that much fun doing it. I think that we should have done our newspaper on word not indesign so we could work on it at home. Overall it was not a fun experience.
I thought that making the newspapers was a fun experience. We really felt like a journalist, trying to reach a deadline for the newspaper the next day. I also thought that it was nice that we could use one of the articles that we already wrote, because it would have been hard interviewing someone for the feature article and writing another one. It was fun to get to learn about the newspaper and then create one. I thought that InDegin was a great program because it allowed you to do whatever you wanted to do, but it wasn't too tough to use.
I thought the newspaper was a lot of fun. We had learned a lot about the newspapers and then we got to make our own paper. It only got stressful at the end. In the end all of the newspaper turned out great. It was a fun project.
I think that making the newspaper made a lot of people stressed but peoplealso enjoyed putting together a paper. My favorite part was designing the newspaper.

I think that it was fine but it we had to much stuff for only 2 pages, I think we should be able to have a bigger newpaper with more pages, or just not due it at all! Over all it was fun.
I think that doing the newspaper was a fun assignment but it put a lot of stress on me. It opened my eyes to how hard the people who put the real newspapers together have to to work. I definitely have a lot more respect for newspapers now.
I liked the journalism unit fairly well but I liked writing the feature article and the fairytale article the best.
I think that writing the newspapers has been pretty hard. But for me once I get started it gets easier. I mean when I was writing my editorial it took me about 30 minutes to write the first paragraph. Then I finished it in 10 minutes. Still I think the whole unit was pretty fun.

But I don't think we should do this again even though it was fun. Getting past all the stress, I got through it and had fun. I gtg to activities so Tyler out.
I appreciate your honest feedback about the project. You all completed a lot of work and, I hope, began to appreciate the excitement/tension involved in having a deadline for your paper. I am enjoying reading your newspapers and hope to return them to you next week. I also plan to share them in class so that you can see the variety of styles produced. I thought knowing that we were using the same software as what the industry uses was pretty amazing, especially for a school project (the newspaper). Even though it could be hard and trying at times--getting the assignment done,it was great using a fun side of our personalities to write different parts of the newspaper. While doing the articles I was very worried about getting it done. This was a big part of our grade and I really needed to do well. At the end of class on the last day we had to finish it I had to stay after class about ten minutes longer then normal. On the other hand it was extremely fun! We got lots of time in the lab with the big computers and got to personalize our whole papers. It was defanitely a pretty cool experience and I look forward to getting it back.
I think that making the newspapers was a good exersise for the class. it was fun and we learned new things. It was fun getting to work with the newspaper on the computer. It was pretty great. I think everyone at least had a little bit of fun. Most people had a lot of fun. There wern't many problems and everyone that needed help got help. Even on the last day the people that were done helped other people who were finishing up. I don't know of anyone who didn't get their paper in. That's a good thing. It was fun.
I think that making the newspapers was a fun activity but at the same time it was sort of a challenge. It was a challenge because we had to make a couple articles and an ad from scratch and we had to put them on a sheet of paper in a way that it will look nice and neat. Over all, I thought that it was very fun and I love doing these kind of activities.
Getting to make newspapers was really fun! I liked getting to make a whole newspaper with rails, articles, and pictures. My favorite would have to be adding the pictures in. It was fun searching for your favorite picture on the internet or taking a picture on PhotoBooth. Decorating the newspaper was pretty fun too. I liked adding all of the colors and making all of the letters form a rainbow. In the end I had a great time doing this project and can't wait to get my newspaper back.
I liked the newspaper project and journalism. I though it was an educational project/unit. The newspaper project was very cool. we got to use indesign for the project, it was the best project so far this year in writer workshop.
I liked the newspaper project because of many reasons . One reason is that we got to experience how to use In Design. Another is that it is important that we know how to write newspaper articles. Third of all, we got to play around and put cool borders, and such things on our newspaper. One thing I would change for next time is that you have to use four pages, one more ad and another feature article.
I liked doing the newspaper project because you can write about mostly anything that you want to and you can design it your own way. I wrote my editorial about why I like apple, and Jeremy wrote about why he doesn't like apple. This is why I like being able to write about anything that we want to. You can express your opinion.I also liked that you can be as creative and artistic as you want to. The cool thing about this is that because Indesign is such a big program, you can do so many things. But the only thing that I didn't like was that we could onlly use the front side and teh back side of one page. This really restricted that amout of information that we can put into our articles. This also restricted the extra things that we can put into our articles, like weather and countdowns. I wish to do other projects like this in the future, I really liked doing it.
I thought the newspaper project was fun because we got to put anything on the newspaper we wanted to. I liked getting to know how to make newspapers. Even though I could use word to work on my articles for our newspaper, I didn't like how I couldn't work on our newspaper at home because I don't have In Design. I think the newspaper was hard and fun. The best thing was designing the paper. I had a hard time filling up the whole page, and writing 2 articles from scratch. It was also knowing what I had to do next. Out of all the projects, the newspaper was the most fun.
I think that making a newspaper was really fun...I really liked using indesign and learning all of its other uses. I thought that the coolest part though was when it came out of the printer. I think that the newspaper project was a lot of fun. W got to use a new program called In Design. It was very satisfying to look at our finished projects. They look almost like real newspapers. When doing this project I think that we all learned a lot about jounalism and newspapers. The project was a little stressful at times, but was very fun. This was a very educational experience.
I really liked the activity a lot. I liked it because we got to desin the newspaper and got to lay it outby our selves. I disliked it because we had to make two articals from scratch. That is what I liked and disliked about the newspaper
I think that creating our own newspapers was very fun. Using the Indesign program to design a front page was very fun. I think it took a lot of hard work to make two new articles though. Most of the people in my class looked like they were enjoying it because they got to use Photo Booth. I really enjoyed being able to get to chose what topics I wanted to do for my articles. Also, being able to interview my friends was very fun. In the end, it was a fun and an intersting experience.

The newspaper was a stressful project since there was so much that we needed to do along with importing it into the computer and making it look good. We only had a little bit of time to do this newspaper and we had to writetwo wholoe new articles along with importing one. The postitive thing that came out of this is that it helped me manage my time better and helped me study better and more effectient since I knew I had alot to do. Although it was stressful project, I was proud of my work and proud of my classmates and I for finsihing this stressful project.
I thought that the newspaper project was a bit stressful just because there were a lot of articles to make from scratch. I liked making egypt ads, but making an article from nothing required a lot of hard work. From my perspective, I saw a lot of people struggling to write their two new articles, and I can relate to that! I liked doing the newspaper, but it was a big project to get done.
I thought it was hard but, I had some fun. I like how Mrs. Sutton came up with the idea of mahing our own newspaper. There was one part that I didn't like and that was finding the pictures. Once I found them I was all set. I found a picture at the last minute. It was a lot of work but if you were ahead of the game you probably did fine.
I thought that creating newspapeers were a stressful but fun project. It was really stressful trying to get all of this stuff done by a certain date. I learned that if you try to do all of the stuff in a five day period, you probably won't turn it in on time. I probably would do this again, but I personally would need more time.
I thought making a newspaper was pretty fun over all because it gave us a big challenge. The newspaper was also pretty agrivating because of all the things we had to do. In the amount of time that we had until it was due we really had to do a lot in that time. I liked doing it though because it made us really think about what we need to do and how to manage our time.
I think the newspaper project was easy because I am very good on the computer. It was hard beacause I couldn't find any pictures on google for my newspaper. i could have don better with the articals but other than that I think i did good.
I thought journalism was fun. It was very different from what we had studied before. I really liked writing the feature story. I didn't really like writing the editorial. I thought the newspaper was fun, but I think (like courtney) that we should have been allowed to do more pages. I think it would be cool if we circulated the newspapers around the 6th grade so everyone in the grade could see everyone else's newspaper. After we did all of that work on the, we should be able to show them all. It was very fun not having to sit at desks. I think it is easier to learn in a more relaxed setting, like the computer lab. I also liked being able to keep moving, since I have a hard time sitting still.
I thought it was a fun experience. It was a little stressful, but that kept you working on it. I didnt like that we had to re-write the other two entries. Otherwise it was a cool project. My only other concern is the little help we got from the teachers with the computers. Other than that it was great!
I thought it was a nice expiernce. It was a little tough but in the end it was fun. I didn't like that you had to rewrite two different two new stories. i also didn't like the help. It was hard to get help. But Overall i had a good time.
I liked doing the newspaper. I liked it because it gave us a chance to see what it was like to make a newspaper and what they have on it. It was also cool because at the end we got to see how much we learned about newspapers. I hope we get another chance to do this again!

I thought that we should have had more time to do the project. I also thought that we should have needed one more article to fill up the page.I didn't think that three articles filled up the whole two pages. I thought that it was a little bit more fun than most of the other projects:).
i liked that we did this project. I liked that we we got to work with Mrs. Zive in the computer lab. I didn't like that we had to write about the academy. I wrote a story on the 2008 National Championship game and I didn't remember until I was pasteing it in my article. I think that the project was a good one and I would like to do it again.

I think that the newspaper & journalism project was good overall. I liked forming the newspaper, the fairy-tale news story, the editorial, and the propaganda booklet. I disliked the feature article. I felt that the feature article was not explainative enough. I think that all the others were very good and I am proud of them.
I thought the Newspapers were amazing! The newspapers were very creative. They had lots of colors and get fonts. I loved how each article had a different subjet and titles. The articles were great and fun to read.

I liked that we learned all different types of journalism. I also like that we could make a newspaper. I enjoyed it because we could use a new application. It was fun to play around with Adobe InDesign.
I loved the journalism unit. It was so fun to to make our own newspaper because it allowed us to express our selves. We also got to do artistic things along with writing. It was a really cool unit.
I loved the newspaper assignment. I thouhgt it was great! I loved how we did previous journalism assignments before we did the big newspaper. I thouht uesing indesign was really fun, and really cool to use. I thought this assignment really showed a persons, effort, time management, and creativity. At times this could get stressful, and it would have been nice if we had more time to work on it. Even with the stress I loved this assignment, and using indesign. Mrs. Sutton is the BOMB DIGITY!
The newspaper unit was a blast for me I strongly suggest it for future classes. In Design is an amazing program to work with. All of the tools are very useful and high tech. This is my favorite unit so far in the writers workshop class. The Egypt ad was probably my favorite thing to do in the newspaper. The only thing i would suggest is to be ORGANIZED.
I really enjoyed the newspaper project. I think it may have been one of the most fun projects I have ever done. I loved layign the whole thing out, that was the most fun part. I'm happy that now I know how to use InDesign. It is a great program to know how to use. I think it was really cool to be able to post out my thoughts like that. I think it is good to have people know what your opinions are on different things.
I thought is was terrific. It was so much fun. I really liked it because I really got into it. I put alot of time and thought into it and when I put thought into something it is deffinetley worth it. It was a great idea to do this and I'm very glad we did. Mrs. Sutton is a great teacher and I learned so much from this project. This is a project that is great and I think that the up coming sixth graders and the years after them will love this project if it stays.
I think creating our own newspapers was a awesome experience. If I could change one thing I would have let us have one more day because on the ast day everyone was rushing. I think if we were to do it again we would be givin more time because if we are going to do a paper we should have done more than 2 pages. In the end it was an awesome project.
The newspaper assignment has been a pleasure to work on. However, it was a bit difficult to work on due to our busy schedule. The magnitude of the schedule became such a difficulty that I was retiring to sleep well after one. But, no matter how much of a impasse it proved to be, the experience was a enjoyable and learning lesson. This proves that Mrs. Sutton is absolutely, completely, and grandly BOMB-DIGGITY!
I think it was really cool how we got to make a newspaper. It was a good idea to have a deadline because it made me really plan my time well. it was also really stressful because something would go wrong i would be like "AHH! What did I do?" Mr.Sutton was very helpful and not bomb-diggety.
I hope I never go into journalism. There was too much to do and I didn't think that I had enough time. The task was too stressful because I had write multiple articles. It was fun but it caused me a whole lot of grief. This newspaper has taught me how much work is put into creating a full newspaper. Considering the assignment it was fun compared to what it could have been.

I think that making the newspapers gave the sixth graders a real feel for being a journalist. I think that if we were given more time and allowed to insert such things as fake articles and comics then it would let the kids be more ceative. Another thing that might have have helped is if we were to be given more time because I feel that I was rushed os i could not spend a ton of time correcting everything. Despite those things I really liked how we could customize everything we put in the newspaper, including the shape of the writing, the color of the title, and the layout of the pages. All in all this was one of the best projects that has been offered at the Columbus Academy so far.

I thought that the newspaper project was SUPER fun!!! I had alot of fun re-writting my articals. It was cool to write about some different things than just what we were assigned. I learned a whole bunch of new stuff like how to use indisighn and how to be a journalist. Journalisim is cool. If i were a journalist I would write editorials!!!!!!!
Creating a newspaper was so much fun! I loved being able to show my creativity on a fun project. If you did work outside of school you could get a lot done and get it done much faster. This project was so much fun. I would really like to do another project like this.
I liked making a newspaper. It was a little hard for me. It was also fun to make an ad and put it in our newspaper. I was a little worried that I wouldn't finish in time, but it turns out I could finish it. I had to take a few pictures of my sister's leg, because I interviewed her about how she fractured it. Overall, the newspaper was an interesting project.
I think journalism is fun without pressure. I had a lot of fun. It would be cool to do one again. Maybe the grade could have one or two people make a news paper every week.
I think the news paper project was instering. I neve though I would get it done, but finaly I did. Now it is over I really want to do it agian. It was fun and hard but I really liked doing it.
I thought that making a newspaper was a great experiance. It taught me a lot about both writing articles and how to use In Design. The whole thing was a lot of work, but at the same time, I learned a lot. When I finished my work, I could compare my newspaper to the acual ones for cities or even the Columbus Academy Newspaper. It was quite fun for me to write articles and put them together in a newspaper. For later, I now know how to use In- design too.
The newspaper was the most fun thing we have done all year! I enjoyed it because we learned so much about what everything is called and what everything does and how hard and fast people have to work to get the paper to people. I liked that we had a guide line sheet to show us what to do and how to do it because it really helped me and other people out!! I also thought it was fun to design our papers how ever we wanted it! I like how we got a lot of freedom and we could choose how we wanted everything! I think we could have used a little more time because at the end people were very stressed and were rushing! Also I think indesign was a lot of fun because we could play around with it! I also liked how we got direction but no an entire bunch so we still had some freedom to make it how we wanted it! Also Mrs. Sutton was a bunch of help and so was Mrs. Zive and they helped out alot!

I liked writing my opinions for the editorial. I liked putting my name in the flag. I felt like I owned an important Newspaper. I really learned a lot from it. I never knew what a byline was or a jumpline was. It was a really good experience for learning and fun.

I liked journalism over all. I had fun learning about editoriel cartoons and propogande. This subject made me use strong verbs that I never thought I used in regular writing. the part I didn't like was that for the feature we had to choose from a list of ideas and I didn't like writing it. Over all I liked it and I think every school should learn it to.
Writing a newspaper makes the students see how hard it is. Also how it can be stressing.

Newspapers were a good experience. It was fun to see all the different things that people wrote about. There was a time of fun because we got to find out about other topics that we did not know about. Most everybody had a good time working on these projects. I hope to do something this fun again.
I thought that the newspaper was a fun process being able to use InDesign, but on the other hand it could be very challenging getting use to using this product. But it was stressful trying to get it done in time before the deadline.
